Mar. 17, 2010 -- Shanghai was ranked 40th in the 2009 list of the word’s most expensive cities, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit, a sister company to The Economist. The city, ranked 45th in 2008, edged out Moscow this year. Beijing moved up one place from last year and is now ranked 57th.

Paris, Tokyo, and Oslo topped the list, which examined 132 of the world’s largest cities.

The cost-of-living ranking is based upon the prices of goods and services in the 132 cities, but not the purchasing power of residents.
