Population
The total population was about 1, 140,900 in 1955. The average age was 35.5, death rate was 28‰ and the infant mortality rate was 430‰.
The total population was 2,870,800 in 2008. The average age was 67 and the death rate was 5.2‰.
Education
There wasn't even one formal school in the modern sense in all Tibet in the past. The illiteracy rate reached 95 percent and the school enrollment rate only two percent.
The illiteracy rate of young and middle-aged people was 4.76 percent and the school enrollment rate was 98.2% in 2007.
The Per-capita GDP
The per-capita GDP was 142 yuan in 1959.
The per-capita GDP was 13861 yuan in 2008.
Religion
At present, there are some 1,700 monasteries and nunneries of Tibetan Buddhism in the region, with 46,000 resident monks and nuns; 88 monasteries of the Bon religion, with some 3,000 resident monks, 93 Living Buddhas and over 130,000 religious followers; four mosques, with some 3,000 followers; and one Christian church, with over 700 worshippers.
Transportation, Posts and Telecommunications
There was no road or telecommunication in the old Tibet.
In 2008, the total trunk roads stretched 5,130,000 km in Tibet. The total number of fixed telephone and mobile phone subscribers was 1, 562,000. the telephone popularization rate reached 55 per 100 persons.
Housing
Before the democratic reform, more than 90 percent of Tibet's residents had no private housing.
By 2008, the per-capita housing area was 22.83sq m in rural areas and 33.00 sq m in urban areas.
